Anatol is a landlocked city located in the continent Heacai. Like many surviving cities, Anatol predates the Apotheosis, but much of its pre-Apotheosis history and traditional practice was lost or stamped out when it was seized by the Second Suns' supporters. However, this transition was uniquely draconian in Anatol. It has thoroughly embraced the Second Suns and driven out (or executed) the last unenlightened souls who clung to the old ways. This has cleared the path for its rise as a center of culture, mainly sacred music and ceremony.

Anatol is nominally a monarchy but unofficially an oligarchy, jointly ruled by the leadership of the Collegia – non-commercial guilds which are responsible for passing along Anatol's artistic techniques and traditions from generation to generation. The Collegia are responsible for Anatol's fame but also its long-term creative stagnation: they stridently oppose any use of the arts not in the service of praising the state-sanctioned gods.

Most Anatolians, even those outside of the Collegia, are deeply pious. They believe that Anatol has survived (where other cities have fallen) because of the Gods' favor and their own ongoing commitment to proper worship. Those not skilled/talented/precocious enough to be taken into the rarefied ranks of the Collegia sometimes seek a life among the Gilded and commit themselves to Apahida, or take up the mantle of Ramtheon and travel the lands as itinerant judges.
